In order to better secure the lid, I thought it would be a good idea to have the lid pop oover the lip - the same way the disposable plastic lids pop onto the paper cup.
The tolerences of the bone china prevented this from being a viable option by itself and what was needed was a way to secure the plastic to the mug more firmly but still allow for ease of removal.
